Abstract

Quality teaching in higher education matters for student learning outcomes. This study examined the mathematics lecturer’s teaching and learning practices at higher learning institution. A pre-observation and classroom observation of two lecturers from the B.Ed. (Mathematics) programme were done during the lecturers’ normal schedules, in their natural teaching and learning environment setting. Each lecturer was observed two times in Semester 1 Session 2014/2015. Seven categories were analysed from the observation data. The categories were lesson introduction, instructional development, interaction, closure,
assessment, resources/technology/ICT, physical arrangement, and values, behaviour, attitudes. The data obtained were analysed in accordance with the content analysis by
focusing on the issues related to mathematical teaching and learning highlighted in the literature. The results showed that the two mathematics lecturers incorporated only passive
teaching method in teaching of the subject matter. This study provides an indication that lecturers’ professional programme must provide explicit instruction in mathematical
knowledge for teaching to enable them to teach effectively.
