Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic and progressive autoimmune disease which primarily affects the joints. It is characterised by uncontrolled proliferation of synovial tissue and a wide array of multisystem co-morbidities. The disease has an insidious onset with unpredictable and variable courses. Typically, RA manifests as symmetrical polyarthritis but may also present with non-specific symptoms e.g. fatigue, malaise and mild fever. Bone erosion,
destruction of cartilage and complete loss of joint integrity can occur over time if treatment is delayed or inadequate.
