Abstract
Ghazal is a traditional art that popular in Malay community in Johor. It was first introduced in the 19th century when the Johor government established diplomatic relations with the Riau government and was often entertained with the art of ghazal.
Ghazal Johor is one of many ghazal genres which evolved in the Malay world by merging poetical and musical ideas coming from Middle East and India. Nevertheless, sung melodies of Ghazal Johor are also presented through musical instruments implying that Ghazal Johor is not merely a poetry based music genre but also understood as an instrumental music form which is called ‘Instrumental Ghazal Johor’
We are trying to dig more deeper about Ghazal Johor so we interviewed three of the individuals that actively practicing this heritage today. May we continue to preserve our heritage, as it is our identity as a Malaysian.
