Abstract
Nutrition is a fundamental pillar of human health and sustainable development (WHO, 2000). Optimal nutrition is vital for survival, physical growth, mental development, performance and productivity. It is also important in health and well-being across the entire life span, from the earliest stage of foetal development to adulthood and older age. However, rapid industrialisation and urbanisation in recent decades have inevitably brought about changes in diet, lifestyle and health of the Malaysian society. Nowadays, our society is facing double burden of nutritional deficiency (e.g., anaemia, stunting and wasting), overweight, obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (e.g. hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and certain forms of cancers). These situations lead to increase of morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs/ expenditure, and eventually impact the productivity and economic development of the
country.
