Abstract

Project management researchers had conducted a lot of research on project success since the late 1960s. One
of the areas that had gained considerable attention in
recent research is critical success factors (CSFs). CookeDavis (2002) distinguishes between project success
(measured against the overall objectives of the project)
and project management success (measured against the widespread and traditional measures of performance against cost, time and quality), and between success criteria (the measures by which success or failure of a project or business will be judged) and success factors (those inputs to the management system that lead directly or indirectly to the success of the project or business). Since the management system that has been widely used in managing activities in a project is the body of project management, it can be said that CSFs are inputs to project management that lead directly or indirectly to the success of the project. Munns & Bjeirmi (1996) also argued that project management and project success are not necessarily directly related.
