Review of the 1996 national ecotourism plan: an approach to sustainable landscape planning. In: IFLA Asia Pacific Congress 2014, 25-30 April 2014, Pullman, Kuching Sarawak. (Unpublished) (2014)

Abstract

Ecotourism; is an environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying features, both past and present) that promotes conservation, has low visitor impact and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local population (IUCN-International Union for Conservation of Nature). In Malaysia (and also many other countries), tourism often provides the prime, if not only, economic rationale to conserve a particular area. However, it is imperative whether the level, type and management of tourism are appropriate. Otherwise, it could result in the deterioration of environment or culture around which it revolves and ultimate destroy itself.
In 1996, Malaysia has adopted their National Ecotourism Plan which provides policy and development guidelines in line with the overall sustainable development of the country and to promote ecotourism as a tool for conservation. However, since then the National Ecotourism Plan has not been revised. Hence, this paper shares our experiences on reviewing this ecotourism plan where it discusses how can ecotourism be an effective conservation tool to conserve a particular area.
This review will evaluate the level of success, constraints and gabs of implementation where some recommendations will be put forward in the ecotourism blueprint in the perspective of sustainable development and environmental risk planning. It also encompasses the methodology of the review ot the national ecotourism plan and the findings of the best practices in landscape planning and sustainable ecotourism for the future to come.
