Abstract
A planned city that takes account of existing landscape characters be it natural or man-made elements and then considering their visual quality will directly conserve the
scenic areas and benefit the communities and visitors of the area and the country overall. In most developing countries, many developments of highways do not consider the existing
natural landscape or the existing developed landscape at the vicinity of the highway projects.
Thus, much valuable natural areas are ignored and destroyed. People see a landscape differently, it is usually affected by one’s cultural background and also the different vicinity
one is currently at. Landscapes are usually created by people who dwells on that land, people who lives there usually develop and synthesizes and use whatever resources
available there to build up the land, thus giving them a distinct character from one place to another. This paper identifies the various highway landscape elements that appeals to people and which do not by conducting a questionnaire survey with the highway users.
