Abstract
There is an emerging global consensus that green spaces within cities and urban areas should be protected for the many amenity, environmental, health, economic and social benefits they confer. However, the capability to inventory and to monitor any changes of urban green spaces and to use such information to help formulate plans to protect the green space is actually needed most urgently in the rapidly developing cities such as Kuala Lumpur. In this study, we explored how suitable the use of GIS and remote sensing methods for recognising, classifying and mapping urban green spaces in a developing cities such as Kuala Lumpur. The
motivation for this study is to enrich the information about urban green spaces stored in urban planning information systems. The method involves first expanding the land cover types to be recognised as green spaces, secondly mapping these spaces out city-wide using existing digital
mapping and then thirdly extracting further information about the nature and condition of the land within each of these land parcels, by semi-automated classification of high resolution IKONOS satellite data. We suggest that the methods could offer city planners an enhanced understanding of the nature and condition of remaining urban green spaces the city provide. The use of GIS and remote sensing produces a more complete picture of the distribution of green spaces across the whole Kuala Lumpur city which enables it to be mapped, possibly for the first time in Malaysian city.
