Abstract

Rapid urbanization has been experienced by many countries since decades ago including Malaysia. As human seek for the goodness of the development process, the adverse impacts such as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon and pollutions could not be avoided and could be a great threat to the environment and human. The UHI effects are including higher indoor and outdoor air temperature, decrease indoor thermal comfort and increase the energy consumption of building. Sustainability is in need in order to mitigate such problems in present and future. Green roof technology id one of the methods that could be use towards achieving sustainability especially in the aspects of environmental benefits. Many worldwide researchers in their findings conclusions also agreed the green roof could be a method to reduce environmental problems but it depends on some essential design elements or aspects. Green roof also has been recognized to contribute in the Green Building Index (GBI) assessment not only in Malaysia but other countries as well. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the design aspects that affect the green roof technology performance the most and its contribution to the GBI assessment. Expected result is that the design aspects being tested the UHI effects in Malaysian local climate. Positive finding is expected in order for the green roof technology to be used in the strategy of achieving sustainability for Malaysia, in present and future.
