The design for a greener and restorative outdoor environments at acute care hospitals: staff’s perspectives. In: IFLA Asia Pacific Congress 2014, 25-30 April 2014, Pullman, Kuching Sarawak. (Unpublished) (2014)

Abstract

This paper investigated how the green outdoor environments (GOEs) at acute care hospitals were experienced and used in order to gain knowledge with implications for design.
Personal interview using semi-structured questions was used to explore staff’s view of how they experienced and used the outdoors. Fifteen staff from five acute care hospitals in the capital region of Denmark was interviewed. Six main themes were identified when the interviews were analyzed. Theme one, ensure accessibility, describes staff preference in having the GOEs close to their work station. The second theme, having private areas describes staff needs for an area in the GOEs without the presence of other users. The third theme, provide window view has been described as important for staff to enjoy the view even if they could not go out. Designing GOEs with priority to other users is the fourth theme which explains staff suggestion that GOEs
should be designed with priority to patients. The fifth theme, include water features is what many of the staff mentioned as their preferred garden features. The last theme, creating outdoor rehabilitation/training/exercise areas, describes employees need in using the GOEs as training areas for patients and also as for staff to the exercise facilities during their break.
