Abstract

Malaysia is a country, rich in unique and attractive cultural heritage. Kelantan, an east coast state in Malaysia is famous for beautiful beaches and cultures. One of the unique cultures is ‘wau bulan’ or kite flying which is a traditional game that is close to the Kelantan community and designated as a national heritage in 2009. It is a folk leisure game that has its own distinctive artistic features motifs. The geometrical element of wau bulan is very unique,
and the design can be applied to Kelantan Batik to reveal the identity and the cultural value of the community in Kelantan. This study is going to discuss on the geometrical element of wau bulan design and its motif on Kelantan Batik. It is an ethnography study, the research data were collected through interview with the batik designer, observation and analysis. The findings revealed that the geometrical elements that can be found are circle motifs, semi-circle motifs and rhombus motifs. Circle motifs are characterized by a close curve consisting of points which are equidistant from a given points. The philosophical values are the unity of the community. Semi-circle motifs are one dimensional locus of points that form half a circle. The philosophical
values hidden is the greatness of Islamic religion. Rhombus motifs is characterized by 4 sides of same length, 2 parallel sides, 2 opposite interior angles of 90 degrees and 4 symmetrical lines. The philosophical values is the duty of each person in the community to help each other.
