Abstract

Batik is a technique of wax – resist dyeing applied on a cloth. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called as ‘chanting’ or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called as cap. This ethnomathematics study is focusing on motifs of contemporary batik design by using new tool such as steel brush and box. It is a qualitative explorative research by employing triangulation method to collect data. The sample method used in this study were designs created by Mr. Junaidi Awang, a senior lecturer from the Faculty of Art and Design, UiTMCK. The results of this study indicated that by using steel brush the design has its own geometrical character and by using box the design has its own geometrical character. In future, many types of resistance can be innovated to produce different designs.
