Appreciating the richness of nature through genetics: discovering new genetic species

Appreciating the richness of nature through genetics: discovering new genetic species. Buletin Persatuan Genetik Malaysia, 19 (1 & 2). ISSN 1394-5750 (2012)

Abstract

Malaysia is blessed with high ecological, taxanomic or species, cultural and genetic diversity found in
our natural environment. Although most of the higher order species of vertebrates have been
described, there are still some anomalies within species complex. This paper describes the usefulness
of biotechnology tools to discover interspecific and intraspecific genetic divergences in selected taxa.
Some of the genetic differentiations are due to ecological and geographical distant and historical
events during the LGM in the Sunda Shelf region. We discovered several genetic species that are yet
to be described in biological science.
