Abstract
In the fi rst wave outbreak that occurred in Kelantan, a state that shares the Thai-Malaysian border, on the east coast of West Malaysia, the movement of fi ghting cocks was hypothesized to be the cause or source of the outbreak. Total eradication of all poultry within the 1 km radius of the index case was undertaken. Afteroutbreak active surveillance within the 10 km radius involving veterinary offi cials swabbing chickens randomly in poultry and birds in each of the villages was implemented immediately
