Flood: Retort packaged food to be supplied to remote, difficult-to-access areas. [Website]
Abstract
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Packs of ready-to-eat food using retort technology will be supplied to remote and difficult-to-access areas during this monsoon season, says Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rina Mohd Harun.
Retort technology is a new food packaging technology that allows food to last up to 18 to 24 months.
“The retort packaged food will not get wet even if exposed to rain, unlike the cooked food that was supplied to the flood victims previously,” she told reporters after officiating the Wanita Bangkit@KPWKM entrepreneurship programme here yesterday.
She said in preparation for the floods, essential items such as dry food, mineral water, disposable diapers for children and adults, sanitary napkins and bath towels had already been sent to mini depots throughout the country.
Rina added that the Social Welfare Department (SWD) had conducted a flood simulation exercise with various related agencies, whereby 10,000 flood volunteers were ready for duty.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had previously forecast that the country would experience continuous heavy rain from mid-November, leading to significant floods at the end of the month.
Meanwhile, Rina said a total of 52,410 women, especially those from the B40 group, had been assisted to generate income through the Wanita Bangkit@KPWKM programme since September 2021, among them being entrepreneurial opportunities, job offers, courses and business start-up guidance through strategic collaboration with various departments, agencies and corporate companies.
