Abstract

The tourism sector is the third third-largest contributor to Malaysia’s economy. Aggressive measures have been taken to boost Malaysia as a leader in the tourism sector. To sustain the tourism industry development in Malaysia will lead to an increase in spending by the government. Due to critical budget availability, one of the alternatives to reduce the spending is to utilize the waqf contribution as an innovative way to fund the tourism sector without relying on government funding. Waqf is an alternative mechanism that can help the government reduce the expenditure in the tourism sector. The study is mainly aimed to observe moderating effect of waqf contribution towards economic pillar in the sustainability of the tourism industry in Malaysia. Besides that, the study examines the economic pillar, socio-cultural pillar, environmental pillar, and transversal pillar contribution towards the sustainability of this industry. Finally, a number of recommendations were presented at the end of this research for the reference of further research, literature, and policy maker.
