Abstract

In Malaysia, the Melanau ethnic or a liko (people of the river) form the largest Muslim group in Sarawak. The Melanau have many similarities with the Sarawak Malays in terms of way of life but they have their own beliefs and traditions. This system of beliefs encompasses theories on nature, man’s origin and way of life. Their traditional traditions are frequently manifested in various gathering events including Kaul Festival. Traditionally, Melanau identity and characteristics are clearly obvious but their easy adaptability to the environment and circumstances has consequently reduced the boundaries of identity to include only practice and customs. This article therefore attempts to discuss this uniqueness identities as a fluid and harmonious society, a mini United Nations with leadership calibre. All these are capable of boosting the Melanau community to their own excellence in the eyes of society and the world.
