Abstract

Starfruit is one of the most important tropical fruit crops for export from Malaysia. Consumers in export markets use the fruit at the unripe, green stage as a garnish only because the taste is so astringent and unattractive. Starfruit are better eaten at maturity once the fruit turn yellow. This breeding project was initiated to improve the eating quality in starfruit. Due to the pollen incompatibility character of starfruit, two commercial cultivars (‘B10’ and ‘B17’) and two polliniser cultivars (‘B2’ and ‘B11’) were used as parents in a diallel cross designed to yield hybrid seeds. Hybrids seeds were collected and germinated in the glasshouse and seedlings were transferred to the field with parents as checks for evaluation. The fruit quality traits, namely fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, total soluble solids content, fruit colour and number of seeds per fruit, were recorded and subject to analysis of variance. Initially, 12 F1 hybrid plants were selected based on fruit quality and self-compatibility. Three hybrids showed improved quality in terms of high vitamin C content, high total soluble solids and less astringency compared to commercial cultivars ‘B10’ and ‘B17’.
