Feeding regime of proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) in isolated mangroves habitat of Sabah, Malaysia. Project Report. Sabah Forestry Department, Sabah. (In Press) (2010)
Abstract
The proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) diet is toward folivory (Yeager, 1989). Feeding behavior of the proboscis monkey may be directly affected by food availability and their distribution (Bennett & Gombek, 1993). Proboscis monkeys do not raid crops in agrcicultural lands nor use areas where there are few trees such as farms or recently abandoned farms (Jeffrey, 1982). However areas such as selectively logged forests, remnant tidal forests adjacent to agricultural land and selectively felled tidal forests maybe used by the shy proboscis monkey (Salter & MacKenzie, 1985) for food sources. Leaves are the most easily available food source for arboreal colobines however they are difficult to digest (Yeager, 1989). Other constraints for leaf-eating monkeys include the availability of specific nutrients in diet and the production of toxic compounds by plants that act as feeding deterrents to monkeys.
