Kelulut (Stingless Bee) beekeeping in Sabah. [Video] (2020)
Abstract
Kelulut (Stingless Bees) beekeeping is a growing industry in countryside of Sabah, Malaysia. Closely related to honeybees and known as Tantadan in local Dusun language, stingless bee produces honey which is rich in anti-oxidant and contains nutrients that improve immune system. Stingless bee honey is mainly sweet, usually with a mix of sour or bitter taste. Though the quantity of stingless bee honey is small, it's in great demand and highly priced (about MYR20 every 100 Gram). Village Development Cooperative (KPD) also provides stingless bee farming course to help farmers to generate side income. In this video is my tour to the stingless bee farm in Pinolobu Village of Kota Belud. They have about 70 bee houses in the farm and rear over 6 species of Kelulut. Stingless bees usually nest in cavity and trunk hollows. The villagers collect the stingless bee nest from the wild and move it to a log (called gelodok) with a roof covering the opening on top. The beekeepers can check out the honey production without destroying the bee hive, to ensure a sustainable harvest. During my visit, they let me try sipping the honey from the honey storage pot of the nest. The taste is sweet and sour with a bit of fruit flavour.
